Saskatchewan Recognizes National Forest Week 2026

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 20 to 26 as National Forest Week, with the theme “Forest Pathways: Innovation and Sustainability." This week highlights the importance of sustainable forest management and the forestry sector's commitment to innovation as it navigates changing market conditions and positions itself for the future.

"National Forest Week is an opportunity to recognize the workers, businesses, communities and Indigenous partners whose knowledge, commitment, and collaboration help steward this vital resource," Energy and Resources Minister Chris Beaudry said. "Our government will continue to support a competitive and sustainable forestry sector that creates good jobs, supports families, and helps keep northern communities strong."

Despite ongoing economic challenges, Saskatchewan’s forestry sector remains northern Saskatchewan’s second-largest industry after mining, supporting 7,000 direct and indirect jobs. Saskatchewan is also home to the largest fully owned and operated First Nations sawmill in Canada.

Indigenous workers make up approximately 27 per cent of the sector's workforce, the highest proportion of any province in Canada. This reflects the industry's important role in creating economic opportunities and supporting community development across the North.

“During National Forest Week, we celebrate one of Saskatchewan’s greatest natural assets,” Environment Minister Darlene Rowden said. “Our forests sustain communities directly with jobs and economic opportunities. They are also vital ecosystems, providing clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and beautiful spaces for recreation and reconnection with the natural world.”

This past spring, the Government of Saskatchewan has modernized the timber royalty system to align the existing system with other resource royalty structures in Saskatchewan and ensure the industry remains competitive with other jurisdictions.
